Thanksgiving is a holiday celebrated in the United
States on the fourth Thursday in November. As a federal and popular holiday,
Thanksgiving is one of the major holidays of the year. Together with Christmas
and New Year, Thanksgiving is a part of the broader holiday season.
Most government offices, businesses, schools and other
organizations are closed on Thanksgiving Day. They have a four-day weekend so
they are also closed on Friday after Thanksgiving Day which is called Black
Friday.

One of the best things about Thanksgiving is spending
time with family. Many people live far from family members and travel long
distances by car, train or plane to be with their loved ones. Thanksgiving is
the busiest travel day of the year!

The
event that Americans commonly call the ‘First Thanksgiving’, was celebrated by
the Pilgrims after their first harvest
in the New World in 1621. This feast lasted three days and was attended by
about 53 Pilgrims and 90 American Indians. The first Thanksgiving meal
consisted of deer, corn, shellfish, roasted meat and cranberries.

A special meal is a large part of Thanksgiving
celebrations. Traditional food include turkey, stuffing, gravy,sweet potatoes,
cornbread, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, vegetables and pumpkin pie.
Thanksgiving is that time of the year when friends and family gather together to celebrate with nice company,festive parades, meals, football and turkey. Thanksgiving is a time for many people to give thanks for what they have.

Since 1924, in New York City, the
Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is held annually every year. The parade includes
marching bands, floats, songs and performances from Broadway musicals and giant
helium-filled balloons. People also enjoy televised football games.
